Jogen Chowdhury Passed Away

An elderly man with long, gray hair and glasses, wearing a light-colored traditional outfit, standing indoors in front of a bookshelf.

Jogen Chowdhury is no more. With his passing, a chapter in the history of Indian art has come to an end—a chapter marked by a deep commitment to art, social consciousness, and a concern for the physical and psychological condition of human beings.

Known for his dynamic lines and cross-hatching, Jogen Chowdhury belonged to a generation of artists who developed an alert and perceptive artistic vision in response to the struggles preceding Independence, social conflicts, and the political realities of their time.

I had the opportunity to meet Jogen Chowdhury on several occasions and have written about him a number of times. My recently published e-book, The Art, also features an extensive essay on his work.

May his soul rest in peace.
